Sarasota shelter's free muzzle program keeps 92% of dogs out of shelters

For a lot of pet owners, a dog's behavioral issues can be the difference between keeping a beloved family member and having to surrender them to an already-stretched shelter system. Satchel's Last Resort Animal Sanctuary in Sarasota is tackling that head-on with its free Muzzle Outreach Program, which gives participating families a complimentary Baskerville Ultra muzzle plus unlimited monthly one-on-one training sessions with a Satchel's trainer — all at no cost. The training leans on positive reinforcement rather than punishment, with dogs working through scent-detection games and confidence-building exercises. The results speak for themselves: a 92% success rate at keeping participating dogs in their homes. It's a quiet but genuinely impactful program, built entirely around keeping families and their dogs together.
